Very handsome and sturdy items. Has later added wheels on for ease of movement, these are hidden.
Approx 83 cm high x 142 cm wide x 55 cm deep.
Beautifully carved on the side, having a candle box within. Substantial piece in lovely condition. I love this!
Mule chests were originally a kind of coffer which were built using old clout nails or wooden pegs. They have hinged lids. The drawers are usually included as it was so difficult to reach the bottom of the chest. They are often raised on stile legs.
The 'mule' term refers to the idea that they look like a mixture of a chest of drawers and a regular chest most likely. The drawers were useful for storing ladies' slippers - hence 'mules'.
